Three staff members of a high school in the western Bosnian town of Sanski Most tragically lost their lives on Wednesday in a devastating incident. According to police reports, a school employee opened fire at the school with an automatic rifle, resulting in the deaths of the school dean, the secretary, and a teacher. The shooter then attempted to take his own life and sustained severe injuries.

Authorities were alerted to the situation at 10:15 a.m., prompting a swift response to the tragic events unfolding at the school. The suspect was promptly transferred for emergency medical treatment in the nearby town of Banja Luka, where he remains in critical condition.

An investigation into the incident is currently underway to determine the motives behind the attack and the events leading up to it. Reports suggest that the shooter, a janitor at the school, had a history of disagreements with the management and was undergoing disciplinary proceedings. Witnesses claim that he specifically targeted certain individuals in the school.

The incident occurred before the school had reopened for the new academic year.

Fortunately, as the school had not yet reopened from the summer holidays, no children were present during the shooting, sparing them from being involved in the tragic events. The community is left in shock and mourning as they come to terms with the loss of three dedicated staff members.

Incidents of mass shootings are relatively rare in the Western Balkans, a region still grappling with the aftermath of conflicts in the 1990s that left a significant number of weapons in private hands. This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the need for continued efforts to address underlying issues that can lead to such senseless acts of violence.

This incident comes on the heels of another tragic shooting in neighboring Croatia in July, where a war veteran shot multiple people in a nursing home, further underscoring the need for vigilance and support for mental health services in the region.
