Three people died within hours of each other in a series of crashes on Victoria's roads on Saturday.

In one incident, police said a female passenger died after the vehicle she was travelling in sped through red lights while evading officers, before crashing into two other vehicles.

Police had tried to pull over the driver of a silver sedan just after 5:30pm yesterday on Ferntree Gully Road after the vehicle was seen allegedly speeding.

The male driver took off at speed before crashing into the other vehicles.

The man is under police guard in hospital and his female passenger died at the scene.

A child in one of the vehicles that was struck was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Professional Standards Command is investigating the accident, as the death occurred after contact with police officers.

Earlier in the day, a motorcycle rider died in a crash at Neerim East, in Victoria's east.

Police said five motorcyclists were riding together in Baw Baw National park just after 3:30pm when one of the riders struck a tree.

Less than an hour later, a motorcyclist died after hitting a tree on Rodericks Road at Wuk Wuk, near Bairnsdale.

Police said the cause of the crash was not yet known.
