Real Madrid are among the clubs who are likely to see their summer transfer window plans change with clubs across the planet hit with the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic.
But Los Blancos have options already within their team and currently out on loan who could see their value to Zinedine Zidane grow exponentially next season.
Ben Hayward casts an eye over the talents who could benefit most.
Achraf Hakimi
Real Madrid sent right-back Alvaro Odriozola on loan to Bayern Munich in January and the former Real Sociedad defender looks unlikely to have a future at the Santiago Bernabeu now, having failed to convinced coach Zinedine Zidane since the Frenchman’s return last March.
First-choice right-back Dani Carvajal remains important, but the Spanish international has had an inconsistent season and remains prone to injury. Real Madrid need a back-up at the very least for the 28-year-old and perhaps competition as well.
As timing would have it, Achraf Hakimi is just coming to the end of his two-year loan spell at Borussia Dortmund and although the Moroccan is wanted by a host of Europe’s top clubs, he belongs to Real Madrid.
Given that he has developed into one of the most exciting right-backs in the world in his time away, he should have a role to play at the Bernabeu next season.
Real Madrid’s failure to recruit a new midfielder last summer looked like a disastrous decision as Los Blancos got off to a shaky start to the season, but the introduction of Fede Valverde has transformed their fortunes.
The Uruguayan is now one of the first names on the team sheet for the big matches and it was his Man of the Match performance - and key foul on Alvaro Morata - which allowed Los Blancos to beat Atletico and claim the Spanish Supercopa in January.
Still only 21, Valverde could star for a decade at the heart of Madrid’s midfield and his emergence may mean they only need to bring in one new midfielder this summer - especially with Dani Ceballos due back from his loan at Arsenal and perhaps Martin Odegaard as well.
Martin Odegaard
The Norwegian midfielder arrived at the age of 16 and was supposed to divide his time between Real Madrid’s youth side Castilla and their first team, but he has only made two appearances to date for the senior squad and is currently on his third spell out on loan.
After a year and a half at Heerenveen and a season at Vitesse Arnhem, Odegaard moved to Real Sociedad on loan last summer and has been a revelation for the Basque outfit in LaLiga this term.
The 21-year-old is supposed to be staying in San Sebastian for two seasons, but that agreement is only verbal and Madrid are considering a move to bring him back in the summer.
The player himself is keen to stay, but the final decision will be made by Los Blancos and the financial impact of coronavirus could play a part in their thinking. With Luka Modric's future uncertain, he could be a ready-made replacement for the Croatian and would arrive for nothing.
