Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer was recently asked about the Jacksonville Jaguars’ general manager opening and threw out three names to watch for as the search process unfolds.
The first was Chicago Bears’ assistant general manager Ian Cunningham–a candidate that Adam Schefter also mentioned as someone to keep our eyes on.
Cunningham is an ascending candidate for this role around the NFL. He was a finalist for the Tennessee GM opening in 2023 and 2025 as well as with Washington before they hired Adam Peters, and he reportedly turned down the Arizona job in 2023.
“He came up in the in the Raven system, at the foot of Ozzie Newsome,” said Breer of Cunningham. “He was the southeast area scout there, which is a very important job for a young guy to have. Ozzie Newsome did not put somebody in that region of the country without thinking a lot of them.
“Rose through the ranks there, then went to the Eagles. Was part of a Super Bowl champion with the Eagles, was their college scouting director, and then became their assistant director of player personnel, and wound up with the Bears.”
The second name that Breer mentioned was former Titans’ general manager Jon Robinson.
Robinson was in Tennessee from 2016 through most of the 2022 season before being fired. During that span, the Titans had a record of 66-48 and made the playoffs four times, which included reaching the AFC Championship Game once.
“I think if you want a guy who knows the division, who understands the dynamics of a market like Jacksonville, who’s really strong on the college side and has a good track record of setting up a department and leading, I think John Robinson would be a strong candidate. I think he will be in the mix for the job,” Breer said.
The last name Breer mentioned is an in-house candidate in Ethan Waugh, who is currently serving as the Jaguars’ interim general manager.
Waugh has been in the Jaguars’ organization since 2022 as the team’s assistant general manager.
“I think that they appreciate the work that Ethan’s done the last couple of years there, and at least will kick the tires on on him,” said Breer. “So not saying those are the only three, but those would be three to watch for the Jaguars job.”
During Liam Coen’s introductory press conference, Shad Khan provided a rough timeline for the Jaguars’ GM search, specifying that step one at this time is for Coen to build out his coaching staff. Then they will dive deeper into the GM search.
