Leeds United look set to be in the market for a new experienced backup goalkeeper this summer. Illan Meslier is still very much the club’s number one, with the young Frenchman starting every game in all competitions last season.
But after losing Kiko Casilla in the summer, Leeds opted to go down the route of a youthful backup – as they brought in Norwegian shot-stopper Kristoffer Klaesson. Klaesson took a while to settle in at Elland Road but seemed to show signs of improvements during the second half of the season, particularly after his debut from the bench against Wolves.
However, in order for Klaesson to become first team ready, a loan move away could be what is needed this summer. For that reason, Leeds will need to recruit a new number two – which they reportedly looked at in January.

So with that in mind, here is a look at three potential options they could look at this summer.
Ben Foster
Following their relegation to the Championship, Ben Foster announced he would be departing Watford this summer following four years at the club. At 39, Foster could have one last challenge in him, and so that could mean he opts to go somewhere where game time is guaranteed. He has mentioned his desire to play in the MLS on his podcast.
However, if he would be willing to play backup to Meslier, he could be an excellent mentor to help the young Frenchman develop. Foster is extremely experienced in the Premier League, and would bring a big personality to the dressing room – and that is the type of goalkeeper Meslier may need to push him to the next level.
Jack Butland
With Sam Johnstone set to arrive at Crystal Palace, Jack Butland looks likely to leave Selhurst Park this summer. Butland is still only 29 and so has plenty of seasons left in him as a goalkeeper, but whether he is still capable of being a Premier League number one remains to be seen.
If Butland is happy to continue to play second fiddle, he able to push Meslier for a starting position, and therefore ensure he does not get complacent. Like Foster, Butland has a big personality in the dressing room, meaning he would be able to provide Meslier with the necessary knowledge to help him fulfil his potential.
John Ruddy
John Ruddy announced his departure from Wolves after five years and could be on the market for a similar challenge he undertook at Molineux. Ruddy has played second fiddle to both Rui Patricio and Jose Sa in the Premier League, with the latter enjoying a stellar season in his first year at the club.
At 35, Ruddy seems happy to be playing as second choice given where he is at in his career, and his experiences over the years could be key to Meslier developing in the coming seasons.
