Three Jaish militants, policeman killed in Baramulla encounter

Three non-local Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) militants and a policeman were killed in an encounter in north Kashmir's Baramulla district on Wednesday.

"We've killed three Pakistani militants of the JeM during a chance encounter, while several checkpoints were set up in the area. One police personnel also got killed," Inspector General of Police (IGP)-Kashmir Vijay Kumar said.

He said the deceased militants had been active in the area for three-four months. "We were tracking them. Till now, this year, we have killed 22 Pakistani militants," the IGP said.

The deceased policeman was identified as Special Police Officer (SPO) Mudasir Ahmad. "He was a very brave jawan. The terrorists were planning to do some big incident in Srinagar. We've averted a major incident by neutralising them," Mr. Kumar said.

Director General of Police Dilbag Singh had felicitated Ahmad a few days ago for "the good work by him and his team in busting terror module involved in a recent grenade attack on a wine shop in Baramulla", which left an employee dead.

The police identified the killed militants as Haneef, Ali Bhai and Shah Wali, all residents of Pakistan.

According to an Army spokesperson, the trio was travelling in a car towards Mirgund from Puthkah. "A joint operation was launched. The team was fired upon by the terrorists and a gunfight ensued," the Army said.
