Three paddleboarders rescued by lifeboat crews after getting into difficulty off Sunderland coast

Three paddleboarders had to be helped back to shore by lifeboat crews after getting into difficulty in the sea off the coast of Sunderland.

Coastguard crews were called to Sunderland Harbour, in Roker on Sunday (November 1), at 11.46am after reports that three people had got into difficulty.

Two of the paddleboarders were rescued and brought back to Sunderland Marina by lifeboat crews while the other made their way back to shore under observation.

Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team have since issued a warning to paddleboarders to take note of weather forecasts before getting into the sea.

A spokesperson for the Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team said: "Sunderland Coastguard Rescue Team and Sunderland RNLI Atlantic and D-class inshore lifeboats were tasked to a report of three paddleboarders in difficulty in the North Bight of Sunderland Harbour, Roker.

"Along with Sunderland Coastwatch, team members kept the boarders under observation until the arrival of the lifeboats.

"Two were recovered on board the Atlantic lifeboat and landed at Sunderland Marina, while the third made her way ashore unaided while being monitored by the inshore lifeboat. All persons were fit and well.

"Paddleboarders are advised to take note of weather forecasts, especially in offshore wind conditions to avoid getting into difficulties and to carry suitable buoyancy aids.

"In all coastal emergencies dial 999 and ask for the coastguard."

A spokesperson for the RNLI Sunderland Lifeboat Station said: "Both inshore lifeboats launched to assist three paddleboarders who were struggling to get back to shore.

"Our volunteer crew onboard our Atlantic 85 recovered two of the casualties onto the boat while the third casualty self rescued to the beach with the support of our D class and her crew.

"When all three persons were safely ashore our volunteers recovered the lifeboats to the station to wash down and refuel."
