Three movies to watch this Burns Night remembering the great Scottish bard

On January 25, the whole nation celebrates the birthday of Robert Burns. On the day aimed at remembering the work and heritage of the renowned bard, we have prepared a list of films related to the poet.

Tam-Lin or The Devil's Widow (1970)

It is not well-known, but one of Robert Burn's poems was adapted for a 1970 horror film titled Tam-Lin or The Devil's Widow. Inspired by the Scots folk story, the poem talks about a man called Tam Lin who is caught and captured by the Queen of Fairies, desperately trying to return to his true human love Janet.

The ballad dates back to 1549 and has countless adaptations and versions, one of which belongs to the famous Scots poet Robert Burns. His version was taken as a basis for the British horror film, directed by Roderick Andrew Anthony Jude McDowall, best known for his role in the original Planet of the Apes series.

Red Rose (2004)

Named after one of the most popular songs of Robert Burns, the movie shows the poet's life and struggles. The storyline revolves around the opposition Burns faced when openly expressing his views on freedom, slavery and human rights in his work.

The less romanticised story of the man, who faced challenges, misunderstanding and had troubles fitting in within the community. This movie is a successful attempt to portray Robert Burns as he was - brave and talented - and not without flaws.

In the movie directed by Robbie Moffat, Robert Burns is played by West Lothian actor Michael E. Rodgers.

In Search Of Robert Burns (2013)

Presented by the Scots actor David Hayman, this documentary comes as close as possible to telling the true story of Robert Burns. Available through Amazon Prime, the film follows the poet's life from birth to death and explores the events and aspects that influenced him.

Probably the greatest question of how a humble farmer became the nation's most renowned bard will be investigated in the documentary, with both - life's hardships and romantic affairs - being touched on.
