Three men have died after a horror crash on a busy Scots road.

Emergency services raced to the scene of the two-car smash on the A711 Dalbeattie Road, near Dumfries, around 12.40am on Wednesday, March 16.

Cops locked down the road close to Mossend Cottage as they launched a probe into the collision between a Honda Civic and Honda CRV.

The force confirmed three men, passengers in the Civic, died at the scene.

The drivers of the Civic and three men in the CRV were rushed to hospital to be treated.

Medics confirmed two of them have life-threatening injuries.

The road remains closed more than 12 hours later as enquiries into the collision continue.

Local traffic is currently being diverted away from the area.

Police Scotland have urged any witnesses to come forward.

A spokesperson for the force said: “Around 12.40am, we were called to a report of a two-car-crash on the A711 near Dumfries, involving a Honda Civic and Honda CRV.

"The Scottish Ambulance Service and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service also attended.

"As a result of the crash, three male passengers travelling within the Honda Civic were pronounced dead at the scene.

"The driver of the Honda Civic along with the three males within the Honda CRV sustained serious injuries and were taken to Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary for treatment.

"Medical staff have described the condition of two of the men as life-threatening.

"The road remains closed at this time while a full collision investigation takes place."

Chief Inspector Lorraine Napier, of Police Scotland's road policing unit, said: “This tragic incident is extremely upsetting for everyone involved and our thoughts are with the family of those who have died.

“Our enquiries remain ongoing and we will do all we can to establish the full circumstances that led up to the crash.

"I would ask anyone who has any information that could assist us, to contact police via 101, quoting incident number 0059 of Wednesday, March 16, 2022."
