Three memorable Newcastle United F.A Cup third round clashes ahead of Sheffield Wednesday

While the F.A. Cup hasn't been the best competition in recent memory for Newcastle United fans, historically it's been a fantastic addition to their trophy cabinet.

We all know the last major domestic trophy the Magpies lifted was from this competition, way back in 1955 after beating Manchester City 3-1 in the final at the Old Wembley to give the club it's sixth F.A Cup.

But since then, while they might not have made it back to lifting the trophy, there have been numerous memorable moments and fixtures from each round of the cup.

Here are three classic Newcastle United clashes from the third round. Have we missed any? Let us know your favourite third round memories in the comments...

Newcastle United 6-1 Tottenham Hotspur - Third Round Replay, 22/12/1999

A 1-1 draw at White Hart Lane saw the two sides needing a replay back up north at St. James' Park, where Gary Speed continued his goalscoring record against Spurs with a nice finish after a towering header from Duncan Ferguson knocked the ball down into his path.

Just a month after scoring the winner there against Spurs, Greek centre-back Nikos Dabizas was the next man to score, this time a powerful header from a Nobby Solano corner.

David Ginola would bring Spurs back within a goal but a mistake from goalkeeper Ian Walker was capitalised on by Ferguson who fired it into the roof of the net for 3-1 before half-time.

A lovely solo run from 35 yards out with a delicate finish from Kieron Dyer made it 4-1 before captain Alan Shearer scored from the penalty spot after being dragged down by Ramon Vega.

Shearer would find his second - and Newcastle's sixth of the match - following a bullet header on the end of an in swinging cross from Temuri Ketsbaia.

Blackburn Rovers 2-4 Newcastle United - Third Round Replay, 15/01/2019

After a 1-1 draw at St. James' Park, the Magpies travelled to Ewood Park ten days later determined to progress to the fourth round of the competition for the third year straight.

Sean Longstaff looked to make that promise come true when his effort from 25-yards-out was deflected into the goal after just 60 seconds before Callum Roberts added a second for the visitors.

But Blackburn managed to bring it level before the break, as Adam Armstrong fired home before David Lenihan's header past goalkeeper Freddie Woodman to make it 2-2.

No second-half goals meant extra time was needed to separate the two sides, and goals from Spaniards Joselu and Ayoze Perez either side of the extra time break meant Newcastle would go on to play Watford in the fourth round.

Newcastle 4-0 Port Vale - Third Round, 02/01/1993

Entering the New Year of 1993, Newcastle had won 18 of their 24 matches in Division 1 (now the Championship), and welcomed third tier Port Vale to St. James' Park.

The warm welcome would only last until the 49th minute, as Gavin Peacock struck for his first of the match before bagging a second 12 minutes later.

Midfielder and future Magpies captain Rob Lee found their third four minutes later before a strike from winger Kevin Sheedy sealed the game off from any sort of Vale comeback with 10 minutes to go.

Newcastle would get to the fifth round that year before an 89th-minute winner from Roy Wegerle knocked them out after a close tie with Blackburn.
