Three Manchester United players have points to prove in Crystal Palace fixture

Now the wild celebrations have subsided, Manchester United must get their head back in the game.

Wednesday will see United travel to London for the first of two trips to the capital this week to take on Crystal Palace, a fixture initially scheduled for September but rearranged with just two weeks' notice. While increasing the workload on an already hectic January, the fixture has given Erik ten Hag's side the chance to move above Manchester City for the first time in years. For a day at least.

It's a massive chance to deal another blow to their neighbours. City are in action on Thursday against Tottenham. Though Antonio Conte's rabble are in freefall, Spurs are the Blues' bogey team and often win when all logic dictates they should lose.

The trip to Selhurst Park, therefore, offers a great opportunity for United and, if any Premier League title challenge is to be made, wins against bottom-half teams are necessary. Yet, with the weekend bringing an away match against table-toppers Arsenal, Ten Hag will almost certainly be forced into some changes to his starting XI.

Though quality may not be as high throughout, the Dutchman has a massive squad at his disposal and when the fixtures come thick and fast he will have to use it wisely to ensure his most important players stay fresh and injury free.

Palace will be no walk over but they are struggling with just one win in five so the fixture does appear to be one in which Ten Hag can make some changes. It could leave some United stars with a big opportunity to prove a point.

One player who is likely to be drafted back into the starting XI is Lisandro Martinez. The birthday boy is yet to start in the Premier League since his return from Argentina's World Cup celebrations. His absence hasn't been felt thanks to Luke Shaw's excellent displays at centre-back.

After easily dislodging Harry Maguire in the heart of defence, Martinez has now got some more unexpected competition for his spot and he needs to come back in and prove he hasn't lost a step after so long out of the team. Martinez was one of United's best players before the break and United could do with him back in full swing ahead of some tough fixtures.

Midfield is where Ten Hag has a bit of a dilemma on his hands. Casemiro has been sublime in recent weeks and the real driving force in United's great results. Yet, he is one booking away from a suspension and if he was to miss Sunday's game with the Gunners it would be a massive loss. It would make sense, given he could probably do with a rest as well, to take him out against Palace and play Fred instead.

The Brazilian was excellent against City as his energy and tenacity in the middle helped nullify the Blues' creative engine but he has always had a problem with consistency. Fred has played really well in big games before but then gone on baffle against lesser opposition by misplacing passes, putting in wreckless challenges and letting his standards slip.

If he keeps his place in Croydon, Fred could finally prove he has turned a corner and is able to play just as well in less exciting fixtures as he does in the blockbuster matchups.

Finally, though Ten Hag is remaining coy, new signing Wout Weghorst could make his debut. Anthony Martial is a doubt after leaving the pitch at half-time on Saturday and, though unlikely to start, it could mean the big Dutchman is brought into the squad.

United have come in for criticism from some corners for their much-needed striker signing coming in the shape of the 30-year-old, who managed just two goals at Burnley in the second half of last season. While that fact can't be denied, it does ignore that Weghorst's assists in a struggling team put his goal contribution tally up to one every four games and his scoring record everywhere else in his career has been very good.

He displayed in the thrilling World Cup quarter-final between Netherlands and Argentina that his sheer size and canniness in the box can rattle defences and make a significant impact on matches. If he comes off the bench on Wednesday he could quickly prove his detractors wrong and show just how big a game-changer he can be.
