Three people were taken to hospital after two crashes took place on the M4 Prince of Wales bridge. The two collisions happened within two hours of each other on Wednesday, June 21, on both the eastbound and westbound carriageways and left the motorway closed with reports of heavily queuing traffic.
The first crash came at around 6.20pm, a spokesperson for Gwent Police has said, and involved a Citroen C4 and a Honda CRV. Officers attended the scene with paramedics from the Welsh Ambulance Service and WATOs (Welsh Assembly Traffic Officers).
A man and woman, both 69, were taken to hospital for treatment following the collision. A spokesperson from Gwent Police said: "We received a report of a road traffic collision on the M4, between junction 22 and 23, heading west, at around 6.20pm on Wednesday 21 June."

"Officers attended, along with personnel from the Welsh Ambulance Service and WATOs (Welsh Assembly Traffic Officers). The collision involved two cars - a Citroen C4 and a Honda CRV. A 69-year-old woman and a 69-year-old man were taken to hospital for treatment."
BristolLive reported the bridge was closed at around 7.15pm, following a tweet from National Highways advising drivers to use the M48 bridge instead. Gwent Police said a second crash, in the eastbound direction, took place at around 8.20pm.
The motorway remained closed while recovery was in process and it was reported traffic was held stationary at around 9pm. A 21-year-old woman was taken to hospital following this collision.
Gwent Police said: "Officers attended, along with personnel from the Welsh Ambulance Service. The collision involved two cars - a Fiat 500 and a Fiat Punto. A 21-year-old woman was taken to hospital as a precaution."
The road had reopened in the early hours of Thursday morning (June 22).
