Three Greater Manchester eateries named in Top 100 Restaurants in the UK

Three restaurants in Greater Manchester have been recognised in the Top 100 Restaurants in the UK 2022. The distinguished list has been collated based on 1.4 million reviews left by OpenTable diners.

Showcasing a wide variety of cuisines and dining locations across the UK, London venues came out on top with more than 60 per cent of the Top 100 being located in the capital. The list comes just in time for the festivities, as recent research shows over three quarters (78%) of Brits plan to spend the same amount of money or more on festive celebrations compared to last year, with an average total expected spend of £133.09.

OpenTable's Vice President, Lucy Taylor said: “OpenTable’s annual list of diners’ top 100 is back to celebrate another year of dining across the UK. The list highlights some of the most beloved restaurants and cuisines that our platform has to offer, as well as helping prospective diners discover new and interesting eateries, wherever they may be located.

“It's brilliant to see such a diverse array of restaurants up and down the country making the list. Our State of the Industry data indicates that people across the UK are keen to eat out, so whether they are looking for somewhere festive to dine or simply need a bit of inspiration, we hope there is something for everyone to enjoy.”

Both Gaucho and Kala in Manchester City Centre made the cut, while The Cherry Tree in Bolton was also named. Gaucho, the Argentinian chain steakhouse on St Mary's Street, opened in 2015 and is housed within a converted church. The celeb fave also picked best restaurant in the city in The British Restaurant Awards back in September.

Kala, meanwhile, was opened in 2019 by chef and restauranteur Gary Usher, who also owns Hispi in Didsbury. The restaurant was funded for in part by its own diners, who helped the chef to crowdfund a record-breaking £100,000 in 11 hours by paying for meal vouchers up front.

Menus here feature dishes that that have proved popular at his other north west restaurants - Sticky Walnut in Chester, Burnt Truffle in Heswall, Wreckfish in Liverpool and Pinion in Prescot. The design of the space, which was formerly Whistles clothing store, takes on a mid-century style with orb pendants, table lamps and a dark navy and grey colour scheme.

Outside of the city centre, The Cherry Tree in Bolton has been praised by diners using OpenTable for its "excellent" food and "great" service. One diner said: "Attentive but not intrusive at all would highly recommend the Cherry Tree."

The bustling bistro and restaurant at Blackrod, near Chorley, also scooped Bolton's best restaurant in 2020. It serves up classic British cooking with warm, friendly service. Here, diners can expect classic dishes with a modern influence, utilising fresh and local produce.
