Newly released body camera footage from Ogle County, Illinois, captures the harrowing moments when three first responders were shot during a confrontation at a home in Dixon. The incident involved a 32-year-old man, Jonathan Gounaris, who is now facing charges of attempted first-degree murder and multiple weapons offenses.
Sheriff Brian VanVickle emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and complex, requiring thorough review of body camera videos and forensic evidence.
The events unfolded on June 12 when the Sheriff's Office was called to check on an individual who had made threats of suicide and homicide. The individual, identified as Gounaris, was reported to be in possession of multiple firearms.
After unsuccessful attempts by hostage negotiators to contact Gounaris, an emergency response team entered the home. The body camera footage shows the team being fired upon as they entered the premises, resulting in injuries to three first responders.
Tactical medic Tyler Carls, City of Oregon Police Sergeant Tad Deminsky, and Lieutenant Jason Ketter of the Ogle County Sheriff's Office were all injured during the exchange of gunfire. Gounaris was also found inside the home with a gunshot wound to his stomach.
All injured deputies have been treated and released from the hospital. Gounaris underwent surgery for his injuries at a local hospital.
Authorities discovered that Gounaris was in possession of multiple firearms, a fixed-blade knife, pepper spray, and ballistic armor. His firearms owner's identification card had been revoked prior to the incident due to a clear and present danger report.
The Illinois State Police have taken over the investigation into the shooting. Sheriff VanVickle stated that a review of the incident will be conducted once the criminal proceedings against Gounaris are concluded to determine if any agency policy violations occurred.
