Three die from ‘nosebleed’ disease that kills within 24 hours – as town quarantined

Three people have died from a mystery virus causing nosebleeds in Burundi, West Africa.

The unknown bug has caused symptoms including a fever, headaches, dizziness and vomiting, with public health authorities in the country trying to contain it.

The area of Baziro has since been quarantined, according to local media reports, after two of the infected cases were moved there for treatment.

A nurse from the Migwa health centre said the disease "kills quickly", with all three deaths so far having come within 24 hours of the patient showing symptoms.

The Burundian Ministry of Health has already ruled out Ebola and Marburg and is looking closely into the virus, which appears to be a contagious haemorrhagic bug.

It comes after neighbouring Tanzania announced a Marburg outbreak earlier this month, with the World Health Organisation (WHO) declaring a "very high" risk to surrounding countries.

In July last year, doctors were dispatched to Burundi to investigate a mysterious "nosebleed" disease in southern Tanzania which claimed the lives of three people.
