Three dead, up to ten hospitalised as gardai deal with horror crashes over bank holiday weekend

Three people have died and many more were injured in a horror bank holiday weekend on Irish roads.

Emergency services have been responding to crashes all over the country with three people dead in the space of 24 hours on the bank holiday Monday.

A man died and two people were injured in a crash on the N4 in Co Westmeath on Monday evening.

The driver of the car, a man aged in his 70s, was pronounced dead at the scene while the female passenger, aged in her 70s, was taken by air ambulance to Tallaght Hospital where she is being treated for serious injuries.

The driver of the lorry, a man aged in his 40s, was taken to Mullingar Hospital but his injuries are not life threatening.

Hours earlier, a male driver, aged in his 40s, died after his car collided with a wall in Trim, Co Meath.

Late on Monday night in Buncrana, Co Donegal a male driver aged in his 40s, was pronounced dead after a serious crash shortly before 11pm.

The driver and passenger of the second vehicle were taken to Letterkenny University Hospital for treatment of their injuries. The condition of the one passenger, a female aged in her 30s, is described as serious.

Other crashes around the country saw many more hospitalised including one bad smash in Co Tipperary in the early hours of Monday morning.

The crash on the N24 Main Limerick to Waterford road happened at 3:40am.

A woman aged in her late teens was taken to University Hospital Limerick to be treated for serious injuries. A man aged in his early 20s was taken to St Joseph’s Hospital Clonmel to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Another two teens were rushed to hospital in Donegal after a bad crash on the Lough Salt Road at Glen.on Sunday night.

A woman in her forties was airlifted to hospital following a crash between a lorry and a car in Co Longford on Saturday morning.

A child was also brought to hospital for non-life threatening injuries after the collision.
