Three dead in listeria outbreak linked to desserts served by NHS

• Three deaths have been linked to a listeria outbreak possibly connected to desserts served in NHS hospitals and care homes.
• Five cases of listeria infection, occurring between May and December 2024, have been linked to a strain found in Cool Delight Desserts mousses.
• The individuals affected, aged 68 to 89, had underlying health conditions and were hospitalised. While one death was directly attributed to listeria, two others had the infection at the time of death.
• Although testing revealed listeria levels below the legal limit in the Cool Delight Desserts mousses, NHS facilities have been advised to remove all of the company's products as a precaution.
• Listeriosis symptoms resemble the flu, but severe cases can lead to meningitis or sepsis. Vulnerable groups like the elderly, pregnant women, and newborns are at higher risk.
