Three Boston Celtics alumni on the move in 2016 NBA redraft

The Boston Celtics saw several alumni on the move in a recent redraft of the 2016 NBA draft class that features star Celtics wing Jaylen Brown, super sixth man Malcolm Brogdon, and fan favorite swingman Guerschon Yabusele that was put together by Hoops Hype’s Frank Urbina and Raul Barrigon they frame as “the way it should have been in hindsight” given how few stars have come from this particular class.

The ball club saw a small but significant bump for one of the three, a massive jump for another — and one of the trio fell out of the first round of the draft altogether.

Let’s take a look at who they saw being taken where.

No. 36 - Malcolm Brogdon - redrafted 10th

Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

“A high-IQ floor general who rarely makes mistakes, the only thing holding Malcolm Brogdon is limited athleticism,” writes H/H.

“Besides that, Brogdon has the strength to get to the rim and finish around the basket, shoots the ball very well, can create plays for others, and provides good toughness defensively against opposing guards.”

No. 16 - Guerschon Yabusele - NOT redrafted

Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

The Dancing Bear did not make the cur for Hoops Hype, and it is not too hard to understand why.

Back in Europe after a failed stint in the NBA with Boston, Yabu is not the sort of player most teams would have been looking for with a select just outside of the lottery, even considering the cap concerns that led to the Celtics picking him.

No. 3 - Jaylen Brown - redrafted 2nd

Eric Hartline-USA TODAY Sports

“From a very raw prospect to the second-best player from his draft class, Jaylen Brown is a two-way star who thrives as a scorer and defender,” notes H/H.

“Brown’s jumper has particularly come along, with the former Cal standout able to hit shots from all over the floor. The one thing still lagging behind for Brown is his ball-handling and ability to limit turnovers.”
