Upstep Erik ten Hag, the latest man to drink from the poison chalice.
There's no doubt that a club the size of Manchester United, despite the myriad of problems and steady decline over the last decade, remains a tantalising job for managers. Being the man to restore a great club to where it should be and earning legendary status is an alluring prospect but it of course comes with massive risk.
Ten Hag's stock is at its highest as an up and coming coach and he has everything set up for him perfectly at Ajax to allow for him to focus on nothing but making his side as best as it can be. It won't be anywhere near as simple as that at Old Trafford and should he fail then his reputation is liable to take a massive hit.

The Dutchman is almost certain to take the job in the summer and things will be difficult straight from the off as he will immediately have a few massive decisions he will quickly have to make before even considering transfers. His choices could well define how his time in charge goes.
Here are three of the decisions Ten Hag will soon have to consider after taking the job:
1 - Ronaldo's future
This one might be out of Ten Hag and United's hands completely if Cristiano Ronaldo decides to leave due to a lack of Champions League football next season, which seems a near certainty at this point, despite having a year left on his contract.
However, even if the Portuguese doesn't angle for a move himself his future should still be something the new manager considers as there are plenty of pros and cons to keeping him at the club. While he is still capable of quality that no one else can match and is the side's top scorer this season, he is now 37 and is obviously on the decline, he offers so little off the ball it's as though United are playing with 10 men and his static nature may not suit Ten Hag's style.
It will be interesting to see what the 52-year-old decides. Keep Ronaldo to try and get the best out of him again despite his flaws or have a completely fresh start and allow him to leave?
2 - Captaincy
The United armband has been a hot topic of conversation this season as its current wearer, Harry Maguire, has endured a terrible year. There have been loud calls for the centre-back to be stripped of the captaincy as a result.
This is something Ten Hag will have to address when he arrives at Old Trafford and there could be some sense to naming a new captain. It would immediately get fans on side, it would allow him to put his own stamp on the team and, hopefully, it could rid some of the bad emotions from the last few years.
It could also be a blessing for Maguire, too, who clearly can be a very good defender, as he has shown for England, but looks weighed down by pressure at United. Being rid of the armband could be freeing for him and allow him to focus just on getting back to his best form. However, there is also the risk of it coming as yet another terrible blow to his confidence.
It's certainly a delicate situation that will be an immediate test of Ten Hag's man-management skills.
3 - Goalkeeper situation
Though David de Gea has been excellent this season and has probably guaranteed his spot as United's No.1 for a few more years, the goalkeeper situation is one that Ten Hag will have to look at.
While the Spaniard is an excellent shot-stopper he isn't the best with the ball at his feet and that might just provide an opening for Dean Henderson to get back into the team.
Henderson is much more comfortable in possession and is a better passer, which would make him much more suited to how Ten Hag likes his teams to play out from the back.
The new manager will no doubt run the rule over both keepers during pre-season but he will soon have to make his decision on who his first choice is and then look at allowing the unfortunate party to leave. Having two goalkeepers who want to be first-choice is an untenable situation that United have allowed to fester for too long as it is.
