Three admit killing man in early hours gang attack outside shopping centre

Two men and a boy have admitted killing a man in an attack outside a shopping centre.

Christopher Molloy was seriously injured after being assaulted by a gang close to Burger King on Bootle Strand in the early hours of July 12 last year. The 55-year-old died in hospital a week later on July 19 2021 as a result of his injuries.

Three defendants - Jay Byrne, Joseph Byrne and a 15-year-old boy who cannot be named for legal reasons - appeared before Liverpool Crown Court this afternoon, Wednesday, in relation to his death. They each denied Mr Molloy's murder, but pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

Jay Byrne, aged 26 and of Leyland Road in Southport, and the youth also pleaded not guilty to a further count of theft. This relates to "unknown items" allegedly stolen from the deceased on July 12.

The former appeared in a red Nike t-shirt with his long blonde hair tied back in a bun while 25-year-old Joseph Byrne, of Lincacre Road in Litherland, wore a grey Nike t-shirt and sported short brown hair. A trial in relation to the murder and theft charges is due to open at the same court tomorrow morning, Thursday.
