Thousands welcome Katie Taylor home to Bray after becoming unified world champion

Bray rolled out the red carpet for boxer Katie Taylor yesterday after her historic win in the US.

The Co Wicklow star, 32, became the undisputed lightweight world champion after her closely fought win over Belgian Delfine Persoon last weekend.

The “Bray Bomber” was welcomed by fans from across Ireland in her home town.

She was introduced on to the stage by MC Des Cahill along with her family and five belts.

Katie said: “I’m so, so grateful for the support I get in this town, the backing I get is amazing so I’m delighted to come back here as the undisputed champion.”

Her manager Brian Peters described her as “humble, inspiring and a great role model”.

The boxer also compared the rapturous welcome to when she returned home after winning gold at the London Olympics in 2012.

Fan Darren, from Bray, described Katie as a “legend” with his daughter Mia adding “she’s the greatest boxer alive”.

Ronan Collins, from Ashbourne, said he idolised the fighter from “the very beginning and now his daughter loves her too”.

Katie told how she is looking forward to a possible rematch with Persoon, adding: “I have plenty of years left in me and the best is yet to come.”
