Tens of thousands of Muslims have gathered in Mecca to pay their respects and pray for murdered journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Scores of well-wishers surrounded the Kaaba in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, to pay tribute to the Washington Post journalist, who was killed when he attended the Saudi Embassy in Istanbul on October 2.

Incredible pictures show the scale of people who assembled to pray at the Grand Mosque for Mr Khashoggi, who was a vocal critic of the Saudi government.

Saudi Arabia said 11 suspects have been indicted in the killing of Mr Khashoggi, while another ten people are in custody, making the total number of people detained 21.

Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister says that Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman had "absolutely" nothing to do with the killing of Mr Khashoggi.

"Absolutely, his royal highness the crown prince has nothing to do with this issue," Adel al-Jubeir told reporters in a press conference in Riyadh.

He spoke just hours after Saudi Arabia's top prosecutor said he was seeking the death penalty for five men who exceeded their authority and carried out the killing.

Al-Jubeir said the kingdom is investigating and holding those responsible to account "to make sure this doesn't happen again."

"Sometimes mistakes happen... sometimes people exceed their authority," he said, adding the kingdom is now focused on ensuring such an operation does not happen again.

On Friday, funeral prayers were also held for Mr Khashoggi in Istanbul.

Mr Khashoggi’s friends, Turkish politicians and others attended the prayers at Istanbul’s Faith Mosque. The prayers were held “in absentia”, because the journalist’s remains have yet to be been found.
