Thousands removed from NHS wait lists by Government doctor scheme

  • A Government initiative sending expert medical teams to hospitals in areas with high unemployment is resulting in a significant reduction in NHS waiting lists.
  • Health Secretary Wes Streeting says the programme has cut waiting lists by 130 per cent in targeted areas.
  • About 37,000 patients have been removed from waiting lists in the 20 areas, with each hospital trust averaging nearly 2,000 removals.
  • The scheme aims to improve patient health and boost the economy by addressing high levels of sickness-related unemployment.
  • Following the programme's success, the Government plans to expand the specialised teams to more areas later this year.
