Netflix password sharing ban launches in UK putting thousands at risk of losing access

Netflix will send out emails to thousands of Netflix users today, warning them that they may lose access to their accounts.

It comes after the online streaming giant officially banned password sharing for UK customers. Users across the country who share passwords will receive an email today notifying them that the account is only intended for a single household. However, there is one way customers can still include people from outside their household, but it's going to cost some extra cash.

Netflix confirmed that customers can choose to pay an additional £4.99 a month if they have a member outside of their households using the account. This will allow such members to still use Netflix from anywhere, including outside of the country.

In a statement regarding the enforcement of the new rules, Netflix said: "Starting today, we will be sending this email to members who are sharing Netflix outside their household in the United Kingdom. A Netflix account is for use by one household.

"Everyone living in that household can use Netflix wherever they are – at home, on the go, on holiday – and take advantage of new features like Transfer Profile and Manage Access and Devices.

“We recognise that our members have many entertainment choices. It’s why we continue to invest heavily in a wide variety of new films and TV programmes – so whatever your taste, mood or language and whoever you’re watching with, there’s always something satisfying to watch on Netflix.”

The company originally announced its plans to clamp down on account sharing in October 2022. It introduced fees for password sharing in Canada, New Zealand, Portugal, and Spain in March.

In April, the company reported an additional 1.75 million subscribers in the first quarter of 2023. This resulted in a 4.9 increase from the final three months of 2022 and equated to 232.5 million users.

The new rules may come as a surprise to some users who previously saw Netflix's joke on Twitter that it was fine with people sharing passwords. In 2017, the official Netflix account wrote: "Love is sharing a password."
