Just 22,000 renters have claimed rent tax credits worth €1,000 for 2022 and 2023, new figures have shown.
The Government announced as part of last September’s Budget that renters would be able to claim a rent tax credit worth up to €500 for each year between 2022 and 2025. Their landlord must be registered with the Residential Tenancies Board (RTB) in order for them to be eligible.
It was confirmed that as well as being able to claim back the credit for 2022, renters would also be able to claim the credit for 2023 in real-time as rent is incurred or at the end of the year through their Income Tax return. Figures provided by Finance Minister Michael McGrath to Fianna Fáil TD Jim O’Callaghan, show that 247,158 Rent Tax Credit claims have been made by almost 225,000 taxpayers.

Some 193,283 taxpayer units made claims for 2022 only. Another 9,611 taxpayer units made claims for just 2023. However, just 22,059 taxpayers have made claims for both years.
The highest number of claims for the rent tax credit was made in Dublin, where 102,583 people made claims. This was followed by Cork (24,664 claims), Galway (15,709) and Limerick (10,609).
The fewest claims have been made in Leitrim, where just 697 people have applied for the credit. Deputy O’Callaghan told the Irish Mirror that more renters should be encouraged to claim the credit.
He said: “The rent tax credit is a very good scheme that provides financial support to tenants.
“I welcome the fact that 225,000 PAYE taxpayers availed of the scheme. We won’t know until the end of the year how many self-employed tenants people also availed of it.
“There are many more people who could avail of it and I encourage all tenants to examine whether or not they can qualify.”
