Thousands of households can get free £145 cash payment to help pay bills - how to apply

Thousands of households could get a £145 cash payment to help them pay for energy, food and other essentials.

The support is being paid to residents covered by Windsor and Maidenhead Borough Council, as part of the Household Support Fund.

To be eligible for help, you need to be "facing severe financial hardship and at risk over the 2023-2024 period".

The council is working with external partners including Citizens Advice East Berkshire to identify households.

If you need extra help, the council is advising households to go to Citizens Advice as their first port of call.

You cannot apply for the cash directly through the council.

If you're eligible for funding, you'll be given a Unique Reference Number and a link to an online application form.

This will then enable you to apply for the £145 cash payment.

Windsor and Maidenhead Borough Council is also running a separate part to its Household Support Fund, where it is giving families in receipt of Free School Meals with vouchers during the school holidays.

The vouchers will be given out during the April half term, summer holiday, October half term, Christmas holiday, and February 2024 half term.

Households will get £20 per week and families should not need to apply for the support - it should be awarded automatically.

The Household Support Fund is a pot of cash provided by the Government and distributed by local councils to help with the cost of living.

Each local authority gets to decide what support it offers its residents - and who is eligible for the help.

This means many families face a postcode lottery when it comes to what help is available.

You'll normally be given support with food, energy, or other household bills. The help is given in vouchers or through cash payments.

For example, Dorset Council residents are able to claim up to £150 in supermarket vouchers.

Cheshire East Council can give struggling households up to £160 worth of food vouchers, as well as £100 to help with the cost of energy.

Warrington Council is paying eligible families £190 in instalments throughout the next year while the scheme is still active.

To find out what support is on offer near you, get in touch with your local council or check their website.

Enter your postcode by using this link to see who your local authority is.

Alternatively, you should be sent council tax letters yearly that state who you council is.

Each council website should have a dedicated page set up with details of its Household Support Fund.

The Government made another £842million in Household Support Fund money available from April 1.

This takes the total amount allocated to the fund to over £2billion since it first started in October 2021.

The Household Support Fund will now run until March 31 next year.
