Around 100,000 Glasgow homes without water after burst main causes huge flood

Thousands of households in Glasgow have been left without water after a main burst in Milngavie caused flooding. Scottish Water say it is impacting the water supply to around 100,000 properties in parts of the city.

Areas impacted include the city centre, Tradeston, Ibrox, and much of the west end, including Kelvinside, Knightswood, Yoker, Scotstoun and Partick. Scottish Water started investigating after customers reported an interruption to their water supply around 4pm on Tuesday, January 24.

The authority later located the burst main on Auchenhowie Road in Milngavie, which causing flooding in the area, majorly affecting Glasgow Road in nearby Bearsden. Local nursery Lullaby Lane had to be evacauted, with kids and staff taken in by neighbours Rangers FC at their Auchenhowie training complex. They confirmed on Twitter that everyone was "safe, happy, & warm".

Emergency services including Scottish Fire and Rescue and police teams are at the scene with several roads closed down. Dramatic footage from the scene shows chunks of tarmac ripped up from the impact of the water while a river of gushing floodwater flows down the street.

Customers are experiencing no water, low pressure or discoloured water supplies. Scottish Water hopes to have isolated the burst soon and implement changes to the network to restore supplies later this evening. It will then carry out an emergency repair as quickly as possible.

A Scottish Water spokeswoman said: “This is a major burst which is impacting a lot of our customers and we want to reassure them we are working as quickly as possible to carry out this repair and restore supplies. We apologise to all customers affected for the inconvenience and disruption.

"Our teams are currently working alongside the police and fire service, and as soon as more information becomes available, we will be in touch."

Greater Glasgow Police stated: "Due to significant flooding of the A81 (Glasgow Road) at its junction with the A807 (Auchenhowie Road) and the surrounding area, the following road closures are now in place: Auchenhowie Rd closed at the roundabout junction with Boclair Rd; A81 (Glasgow Rd) closed at the roundabout junction with B8030; A81 shut at Dougalston Ave. Please avoid the area until further notice and heed advice re alternative routes."

In an update at 7.30pm, Scottish Water said teams onsite have now isolated this water main, and supplies are restoring to 56,000 properties across Knightswood, Yoker, Scotstoun and Partick.

They are carrying out network alterations to restore all remaining water supplies in Glasgow city centre, Kelvinside, Tradeston and Ibrox, they expect it to be restored for 10pm.

Dozens of affected Glaswegians took to Twitter to vent about the lack of water in their homes. One wrote: "My entire street in Glasgow has lost water, which is fun. A lot of student flats and cafes."

Another said: "I can confirm I also suddenly have no water in G2 without any notice whatsoever."

One punter came up with a typically-Scottish back-up plan. They said: "Glasgow city centre and surroundings has no running water peeps, best get on the whisky."
