Thousands of chanting Bayern Munich fans march through Manchester ahead of City Champions League tie

These were the dramatic scenes as thousands of chanting Bayern Munich fans were escorted through Manchester city centre.

The German football supporters made their way to the Etihad Stadium this evening ahead of their team's UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie against Manchester City.

Video footage shows police leading the away supporters along Newton Street, up Great Ancoats Street and onto Old Mill Street en route to the ground.

Despite the rain, the Bavarians were in fine voice and could be heard chanting as they marched through the Northern Quarter.

Eyewitnesses reported that traffic was briefly stopped on several roads to allow supporters to pass. There were no reports of any trouble.

Elsewhere this evening, there are no Metrolink services running between Ashton-under-Lyne and the Etihad due to a tram fault at Audenshaw. Supporters travelling to the game have been urged to board the 216 bus, which will take them straight to the ground.

City are in high spirits as they welcome the Bundesliga giants for the first leg of the quarter-final tie, which kicks off at 8pm. The Blues have won their last two outings 4-1 and scored 21 goals in their last four matches alone.
