Thousands expected to flock to car cruise event as police issue warning to drivers

Thousands of petrolheads could turn up for an annual car cruise event in Irvine this evening.

Cruise Irvine is set to take place at the town's beach park from 6pm.

Police have issued a warning ahead of the event with the promise of officers patrolling the various routes to the beach park.

Cops also warned that cars should be roadworthy and that all documents should be in order.

Any drivers engaging in anti-social behaviour could face prosecution and/or having their motor seized, police also cautioned.

It's anticipated that the roads in the area will encounter huge delays and heavy congestion.

Previous events have seen thousands of car enthusiasts head to the Ayrshire coast to show off their motors.

A Police Scotland statement reads: "Police Scotland are aware of a car cruise event planned for the Irvine area of North Ayrshire on the evening of Sunday, May 29.

"Previous events have attracted over 1,000 cars and police are therefore advising members of the public that there maybe some congestion and possible delays in the area.

"Locality Policing Officers and colleagues from the Divisional Roads Policing unit will be on duty in the area. Police vehicles will also be patrolling the routes leading to and from the event.

"Drivers are asked to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy and that all documents (licence, tax , insurance etc) are in order.

"We understand that the majority of those attending this event are not intent on breaking the law.

"Those who choose to participate in antisocial behaviour such as speeding, wheel-spinning or creating a disturbance will be dealt with by officers and could face prosecution and/or have their vehicle seized.

"Please keep your vehicle on the road and use the designated car parking areas. Driving off-road will not be tolerated and can cause damage to the environment.

"If you are attending the event please enjoy it, share this post, act responsibly and encourage others not to spoil it for the majority.

"Anyone with any specific concerns is asked to speak with officers on patrol or call their local policing team on 101."
