More than 75,000 Washington Post readers have canceled their digital subscriptions following owner Jeff Bezos' announcement that the newspaper's opinion section would be restructured to align with libertarian values while excluding opposing viewpoints.
On Wednesday, Bezos announced his plan to reshape the paper's opinion section, sparking immediate backlash, NPR reported.
Opinions Editor David Shipley resigned in protest, and longtime Post journalists, including Associate Editor David Maraniss and former Executive Editor Marty Baron, condemned Bezos' move.
The Amazon founder defended his decision, arguing that newspapers no longer need to offer "broad-based" opinion pages representing all viewpoints. Instead, he stated the Post would champion "personal liberties and free markets" while leaving dissenting perspectives to other publications.
Since acquiring The Washington Post in 2013, Bezos has largely maintained the paper's editorial independence. However, in late 2024, Bezos blocked the paper's planned endorsement of Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris, leading to over 300,000 subscriber cancellations.
