Thousands back dad 'considering divorce' after creepy argument with wife over daughter's name

Thousands of people online have been backing a young dad who says he is ‘considering divorce’ after he realised why his one-year-old never responds to her name.

The anonymous Reddit poster explained that when he and his wife were trying to get pregnant, they had a deal that if they had a boy, she would get to choose the full name and if they had a daughter the husband could.

To make things more amicable they both had a ‘veto’ just in case they didn’t like the first name the other had chosen.

He said: “Once we got pregnant, my wife was completely sure that we're having a boy because ‘a mother knows.’

“Her entire family was convinced of it too. During the baby shower, everything was blue and all the gifts were demanded to be masculine. Her mother had already started knitting things with the name my wife had chosen.”

However, once the child arrived, they realised they had a baby girl, to which the father says: “I was ecstatic because, although I wanted both a boy and a girl, I always imagined my first born to be a girl.

“My wife, though seemingly exhausted, was happy too. When I wrote the name in the birth certificate, I let her know I was using the name I had already run past her.”

Things were going smoothly, although the 29-year-old dad was beginning to realise his daughter didn’t really respond to the name he had given her.

All became clear when he explained that: “I came home from work and I found my mother-in-law and wife there talking about my daughter, only they are using another name.

“When I inquired who they were talking about, they kinda went deer in headlights and blurted that they were talking about our daughter.

“When I asked why they were using another name, my mother-in-law said because that's what we decided to name her.”

After the shock had settled, the young man said: “So now I realize that the reason my daughter has trouble recognizing her name is because we have been using two different names the entire time.

“My wife later came to me suggesting we officially get her name changed and I stuck to my guns and told her we are not doing that and she needs to stop.

“This led to a fight about how unsupportive I am and stole her right to name the child she gave birth to.”

He went on to say that “she wants is a very odd feminine version of the name she wanted for her son. Imagine using a female version of the name Drake or Thomas.

“She got angry and left both my daughter and I and went to her parents. Her entire family except my father-in-law is calling me controlling and how it's unfair I chose the entire name and made it all about myself.

“Honestly, this is so out of left field and creepy that I'm considering divorce.”

Since posting his story, more than 13,000 people have responded, most in support of his anger in the situation.

One person responded by saying: “You probably should divorce her. She’s insane to inflict such confusion on your daughter for as long as a year about something as fundamental as her name.

“A year is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too late to change a name, and she seems to be highly selfish and egotistical, just based on the way she operates, and your MIL can fuck off as well with co-parenting.”

Another wrote: “So, you’re being ‘controlling’ for sticking to the agreement you had? Uhhhh no.

“The only controlling people here are your wife and her mom who apparently think that even though you had an agreement, it’s really your wife who ultimately gets to make the decisions. If you give in on this, where does it stop?

“Clearly there were conversations had that didn’t include you, because they ‘decided’ that’s what they would name her. Your wife sounds selfish and closer to her mom than you…I understand why you’re considering divorce.”
