Thornbury Leisure Centre near Bristol closed after tree fell on power lines requiring 'extensive' repairs

The Thornbury Leisure Centre is closed today due to a power cut overnight. A tree fell onto a power line on Sunday night causing an outage in the area.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service was called to Alveston Hill on the Bristol Road in Thornbury, where the leisure centre is located, just after 6pm last night to reports that a tree had fallen onto powerlines and damaged them.

Firefighters conducted a check of the scene and the building, finding what was described as "minor damage" due to the fallen tree. Police closed Alveston hill overnight and have confirmed that it remains closed today.

Fire crews left the area at around 8.30pm, leaving the scene in the hands of Avon and Somerset Police and Western Power Distribution.

A Western Power Distriubution spokesperson said: "The power cut affected the leisure centre and a generator has been provided to restore supplies pending extensive repairs to the network there."

A spokesperson for Avon Fire and Rescue Service said: "Crews from Thornbury fire station were called at 6.01pm on Sunday to reports of a fallen tree onto powerlines on Bristol Road, Thornbury.

"Firefighters conducted a full 360 check of the building and identified minor damage due to the fallen tree. Crews remained on the scene until Western Power arrived to ensure the electrics had been isolated.

"Crews left the scene at 8.19pm, leaving the incident in the hands of Police and Western Power."
