As Thomas Tuchel prepares to take over as England manager in the new year, former Three Lions star Alan Shearer has encouraged the German to resolve the “strange” situation surrounding Arsenal defender Ben White’s absence from the national team.
White, who informed former England manager Gareth Southgate that he didn’t want to be considered for international duty, has missed several opportunities to represent his country, including a potential spot at Euro 2024.
Shearer believes Tuchel will make it a priority to understand White’s stance on returning to the squad.
Ben White’s England Absence: A “Strange” Situation
Since Ben White’s initial withdrawal from the England squad last year, reportedly for personal reasons, the 27-year-old has stayed away from the national team setup despite his impressive form for Arsenal.
Known for his versatility, White has thrived at right-back under Mikel Arteta, becoming a key player for the Gunners over the past three seasons.
His strong performances have led many to wonder why he would remove himself from England’s plans, especially given the ongoing competition for defensive roles in the squad.
Alan Shearer, speaking to Betfair, commented on White’s international hiatus. “White’s situation is a strange one, and I for one don’t know the background,” Shearer said.
“We all hear different rumours as to why he left the England camp or why he doesn’t want to be selected, but I don’t know whether they’re true.”
I would love to see Ben White under Thomas Tuchel. 🦋
Would be excellent as a RCB in his back three. pic.twitter.com/kgWeDsFdKo

A Fresh Era with Tuchel Could Bring White Back
With Southgate’s departure ushering in a new chapter for England, Tuchel’s arrival could provide an opening for White to reconsider his international future.
The former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager is expected to reach out to White to gauge his interest in returning to the Three Lions. According to Shearer, this conversation will likely be one of Tuchel’s first steps in shaping the new England squad.
“Thomas Tuchel will want to have a conversation with Ben or Arsenal and try to find out why he doesn’t want to be selected if that is the case,” Shearer explained.
“If Ben doesn’t [want to return], then you must respect that, and that doesn’t mean I agree with it, but you have to respect it.”
White’s absence has left many fans speculating about his reasons, and a meeting with Tuchel could clarify whether the defender sees a future in the national team.
England’s Defensive Options and White’s Potential Role
England’s right-back position is currently one of the most competitive spots in the squad, with Kyle Walker, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Reece James, and Kieran Trippier vying for minutes.
However, White’s adaptability could be invaluable for Tuchel, as he can cover both right-back and centre back. His defensive stability and technical skill would be valuable assets, especially as Tuchel looks to solidify his tactical approach in a new role.
Interim coach Lee Carsley will guide the team through the upcoming Nations League fixtures against Greece and the Republic of Ireland, giving Tuchel time to assess his options before England’s March fixtures.
