Thomas Tuchel's verdict on Mason Mount could be bad news for Manchester United

Bayern Munich could well be set to scupper Manchester United's transfer plans amid reports they're planning to make a move for Mason Mount.

The German side look set to win the battle for Napoli defender Kim Min-jae, convincing the South Korean to move to the Bundesliga despite talks of a move to Old Trafford. The Allianz Arena is now expected to be his destination once his release clause becomes active in July.

Erik ten Hag's side are keen to wrap up a deal for Mount, with the 24-year-old ready to leave Chelsea with one year left on his contract. Despite their weak negotiating stance, the London club are remaining steadfast in their valuation and have knocked back three bids.

Frustration is growing inside Old Trafford at the way in which Chelsea are conducting their business, and Bayern now look set to launch their own pursuit. The Guardian reported on Saturday evening that they hope to capitalise on the struggle and agree a fee with Chelsea.

Key to their interest will be Thomas Tuchel, who took charge in March. The German previously worked at Chelsea, his period coinciding with Mount's best form at Stamford Bridge.

Speaking in May 2021, Tuchel reserved huge praise for Mount. "He has the full package," Tuchel said of the midfielder. "Mentally, in terms of talent and physically and the most important part is his character, he has his feet on the ground and he's a nice guy.

"He comes to Cobham [Chelsea's training ground] every day to learn something new and have new experiences. It's a pleasure to have him, be at his side and guide him and support him. It's impressive, he's not affected by all the praise. This is maybe the most important part.

"He seems to be a guy who likes the sport and feels an obligation to make the most out of it and he wants it absolutely badly, so it's a top mix."

Tuchel's admiration for Mount is likely the driving force behind Bayern's sudden interest. Whether the Chelsea star would be open to leaving England remains to be seen, and in agreeing personal terms on a move to Old Trafford in May, he has already put his cards on the table.

But Tuchel is undoubtedly a huge fan of Mount and will urge Bayern to accelerate their interest.
