Thomas Tuchel's stance on Timo Werner's Chelsea future as Newcastle United links emerge

Newcastle United are reportedly in for Chelsea striker Timo Werner after recent comments from the German forward sparked rumours that he could seek a move away from Stamford Bridge. Werner has managed just ten goals in 56 Premier League appearances for Chelsea since moving from RB Leipzig in 2020.

German journalist Christian Falk confirmed that rumours of Newcastle’s interest in the 26-year-old were true. His future with Chelsea has been a strong topic of conversation in the last week, with the Blues searching for a marquee signing at centre-forward, which would likely limit his game time.

Werner, while saying he was happy at his current club, appeared to take a thinly-veiled dig at Thomas Tuchel and back-tracked to a more non-committal stance on Chelsea by saying he could be “happy everywhere”.

The German forward said: "First of all, the most important thing is that I am happy. I am happy when I play and score goals. That’s the fact. That’s what I should take care of, and the other things will come.

“I think, of course, the manager always has different ideas, different thoughts and what you need in different games. I think in many games, I was not in his thoughts, so I try to change that. I could be happy everywhere. It is hard to say [why I've struggled for game time]."

While the situation is uncertain, Tuchel has revealed that Werner is in his plans at Chelsea; when asked whether the German has a place at Stamford Bridge, he replied: “Sure, he is our player, sure.

“Show quality, take your place and defend your place. I would be one of the happiest people on the planet having a contract with Chelsea. I’m surprised; I would be very happy as a young guy having a contract at Chelsea Football Club. I would be one of the happiest people on the planet. If he said this, I do not understand."

Tuchel also shared his views on Werner eyeing up a potential return to Germany; he told Sky Sports: “I don’t think so, I don’t know about it. Timo has not talked to me about it, so in the moment I think he wants to make his way at Chelsea. He still has a point to prove.”

Last summer Werner was subject to the same rumours about his future, and his agent Karlheinz Forsterbe said at the time that he was comfortable but admitted that Chelsea was not as great a fit for his client as it was at RB Leipzig under Julian Nagelsmann

“You can’t rule out anything, but if I had to assess it at the moment, then I would say very clearly that Timo will stay at Chelsea,’ he told Sport1 . “He feels comfortable there. A move will not be an issue in the foreseeable future.

“Julian let Timo play in a different position at Leipzig. A bit like Thomas Muller at Bayern. Julian and Timo appreciate each other. Of course, I don’t yet know what will happen in three or four years. Football is fast moving.”
