Thomas Tuchel questions Boris Johnson’s ‘priorities’ after Chelsea fans urged to stop Roman Abramovich chants

Thomas Tuchel has questioned Boris Johnson’s priorities after the Prime Minister called on Chelsea fans to stop chanting Roman Abramovich’s name.

Mr Johnson said it was “completely inappropriate” for Chelsea fans to continue singing about their owner after he was sanctioned by the UK Government for his ties to Russian president Vladimir Putin.

Tuchel has himself been critical of the club’s supporters when chanting for Abramovich during a minutes’ applause for victims of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine ahead of the game at Burnley earlier this month.

But he suggested Johnson’s focus should be elsewhere after the PM’s spokesperson made a point of telling fans to stop vocalising their support for their oligarch owner.

“I heard about it some minutes ago,” said Tuchel on Tuesday. “I don’t know if in these times this is the most important subject to be discussed in parliament.

“If fan chants need to be discussed in parliament, maybe we need to worry about the priorities of discussions there, but okay. No need to comment from me. We have far more urgent things to discuss and handle.”
