Thomas Tuchel hints three Chelsea stars could start vs Luton after Romelu Lukaku prediction

Thomas Tuchel believes that by not starting Romelu Lukaku, Timo Werner and Jorginho they were able to look fresh in their time on the pitch against Liverpool.

The trio all made their appearances in the Carabao Cup final from the bench, with Lukaku's role in particular being the subject of a great deal of debate over the last 10 days following a disappointing outing against Crystal Palace.

That display also saw him benched for the visit of Lille in the Champions League, with the Blues boss suggesting he needed to be taken out of the firing line.

While previewing the trip to Kenilworth Road, Tuchel lamented the 'physical overload' of his stars after heading to extra time once again at Wembley.

With his praise of the condition of the aforementioned trio, Tuchel has perhaps hinted that they will have a place in his starting line-up against Luton, given they have played fewer minutes than many teammates.

"The players never, never, never like it, the big players absolutely hate it if they are sometimes out, and the coach takes the decision to rest them," said the German coach.

"But look how sharp Jorgi looked. Romelu looked good, Timo looks better.

"It’s sometimes like this, that you need a breather if you work so heavily and you get a bit stuck and everything feels a bit tight and hard, you take a step back and let others do the work who feel a bit more comfortable."

After being introduced in the 72nd minute against Liverpool, Lukaku attempted to have a much great impact than his infamous game against the Eagles. Despite fewer minutes on the pitch at Wembley he found himself more involved and took his goal very well before it was ruled out for a controversial offside decision.

Tuchel envisaged that the Belgian would net, but can't quite get his head around the implementation of VAR. However, he accepts the arguments as part of the beauty of football.

He said: "It was a very good performance from Romelu. I had the intuition that he would score. He did. And I will admit with you I don’t know any more where it is. Sometimes you have the feeling you see a clear offside, then the line is drawn and it’s suddenly onside.

"Sometimes it’s the arm, up and down, where the sleeves will end. You to ask yourself if we play with short sleeves will this change the offside or not? I don’t know.

"We have to live with it, maybe in the end we have to understand that VAR is a system but it’s also used by humans so this maybe leaves all the time a slight margin of error in it.

"You will never find the full solution maybe, and maybe we have to accept it. You will never find 100 per cent clarity. Like the foul on Trevoh, that was a red card.

"It’s also the beauty of it that makes the sport so popular, that you cannot find agreements on some situations. There are not too hard feelings about it."
