Thomas Tuchel handed formula that unlocks Chelsea's next John Terry amid major captaincy dilemma

Chelsea fans have voted for Thiago Silva to wear the captain's armband next season should Cesar Azpilicueta not extend his stay in west London beyond the summer.

We, Carefree Chelsea at football.london, put the decision in your hands and let you decide who Thomas Tuchel should entrust via a series of polls on Twitter.

Jorginho, N'Golo Kante, Antonio Rudiger, Thiago Silva, Mason Mount, Reece James, Mateo Kovacic and Edouard Mendy were shortlisted as the eight strongest candidates.

Over 2,500 ballots were casted and your votes sent four players into the final, while also throwing a few wildcard suggestions into the mix; Declan Rice and Romelu Lukaku were given honourable mentions.

Fans also threw their thoughts into the hat, justifying their selections.

But, ultimately, James, Kante, Jorginho and Silva received the most votes, qualifying for what was poised to be a high-anticipated final - well sort of, we're just trying to build the suspense!

The Brazil international raked in a whopping 45% of the 2,769 votes, the Cobham graduate followed with 35% in his favour meanwhile Jorginho and Kante fell short of the mark.

It will be hard for Tuchel to overlook why the 37-year-old's mouth-watering CV makes him the natural option, especially if James were to be his understudy.

Jorginho is, of course, Chelsea's reigning vice-captain but the Italian's staggered omission from the first-team in recent weeks leaves a door open for somebody to take centre stage.

The likes of Mason Mount, Thiago Silva and N'Golo Kante have worn the armband on several occasions before which, therefore, throws their hats in the ring.

Tuchel must come to a conclusion soon as talks between Azpilicueta and Barcelona begin to heat up.

The 32-year-old defender, who joined Chelsea in 2012 from Marseille for just £7m, faces an uncertain future at Stamford Bridge with his current deal set to expire in the summer.

Azpilicueta, as it stands, will be available via a transfer at the end of the season, having yet penned an extension with the west London side.

The Spaniard has been subject to growing interest from the Catalan side, who are 'confident' in winning the race for his signature, according to Fabrizio Romano.

If it were the fans' decision, Jorginho and Kante should look to soak up as much knowledge as possible from Azpilicueta between now and the end of the season to strengthen their case.
