At the start of the season, many Chelsea fanbase believed that Kai Havertz and Romelu Lukaku would make the perfect partnership. We dreamed of the potential link-up for the pair. Well, it turns out that they actually just make perfect competition.
Havertz has been on fire since being called upon as Thomas Tuchel’s starting striker. At first, I assumed that it could just be a blip of good form, but now it seems as though the German is up for the task.
Chelsea beat Norwich 3-1 last night, and a win was necessary for more than just the three points.
It has been a struggle choosing which forward to put your faith in this season. The choices between Havertz, Timo Werner, and Lukaku haven’t been easy ones. All the forwards have had their time in the limelight. With that being said, they have also had moments to forget.
We are yet to see our forwards have a long string of exceptional performances. Havertz is the closest we've seen as he has now scored five goals in his last six matches.
Chelsea travelled to Carrow Road and returned with three points and full support from their fans. During a difficult situation within the club, it was hard for fans to find much to smile about, but goals from Mason Mount, Trevoh Chalobah, and Havertz managed to do the job.
The Blues were 2-0 up at halftime, only to concede to a Teemu Pukki penalty. It looked destined for the match to end in a 2-2 draw. It has been the narrative of Chelsea's story for most of the season. Late equalisers to punish our chances missed. Luckily Havertz was able to step up and seal the deal.
When he starts for the Blues, the link-up play in the attack has a much more fluid feel to it. Whereas, it doesn't quite blend correctly when Romelu Lukaku is up there with him. It's weird how these two incredible talents haven't managed to make it click as many would have thought this season. Both players have shown to be capable in front of goal and excel in forwarding partnerships in the past.
The key to Havertz's recent form may have just been the fierce competition. The partnership that we thought would brew has now turned into a fight to maintain that starting spot. Lukaku had his run of games where he was starting ahead of Havertz in that striker role. He had started 11 straight matches and only scored four goals. In the last six games where Havertz has started, he's scored five.
The Belgian has watched the German youngster flourish from the bench in recent matches. It may be that he has lost his starting spot. I don't think there is enough room for the pair to start together as there are not enough positive elements to draw from when they do.
Thomas Tuchel could have a decision to make at the end of the season, especially with the amount of money that Chelsea would potentially need to make up for their summer transfer window.
