Thomas Tuchel arrives in Abu Dhabi ahead of Chelsea’s Club World Cup final after negative Covid tests

Thomas Tuchel has touched down in Abu Dhabi in time for Chelsea’s Club World Cup Final.

The German is set to surprise his players at the club’s Ritz Carlton base.

Chelsea had decided to keep the squad in the dark regarding their manager’s movements, but he boarded a private jet earlier Friday morning in the UK after posting two negative Covid tests.

Tuchel must still test negative following another PCR, which was carried out when he landed, but he is now set to be on the touchline when Chelsea take on Palmeiras on Saturday.

Chelsea are desperate to get their manager over for such a big game in the club’s history. The Club World Cup is the only major trophy Roman Abramovich is yet to win.

The Blues’ owner could also join Tuchel at the match, though his plans have not been confirmed.

Tuchel has still overseen Chelsea’s preparations in Abu Dhabi via video link while self-isolating at home, but midfielder Jorginho admitted his absence had been felt.

“It is unfortunate Thomas was not here, but he hopes he will join us and we are in touch with him,” said Jorginho.

“It gives you more because he is your coach, your manager, and gives more energy in the changing room. It will be really important for us for him to be here. We really hope. At the moment we just don’t know. We hope.

“We are sorry Thomas has not been involved with us, but the rest of the staff have been doing their best and we can feel that.”
