Thomas Tuchel addresses unwanted Chelsea record with Manchester City example followed

Despite the controversy around Chelsea's late 2-1 win against West Ham, a match in which they were fortunate to get all three points following a hotly debated VAR call, Thomas Tuchel's side showed a part of their game that has been missing this season, and for a while beyond that.

Tuchel saw his side once again labour in attack, once again let themselves down in defence and for once, mount a serious comeback. Although the phrase 'mentality monsters' is being kind - especially considering the shambolic nature of the first goal and the second that ought to have counted - the response to come from behind was refreshing.

The German has already labelled his team as soft this season due to being easy to beat and shipping poor goals, that didn't change too much against West Ham, but the substitutes that were made did change the game and on paper, Chelsea did something they don't do that often.

It was just the sixth time in 98 games under Tuchel that Chelsea have come from behind to win in, being the third time in the league this has happened and just the second in the Premier League at home that this has happened. In those 98 matches, Chelsea have gone behind 26 times during games, only getting results in 11 of them.

It's a matter that didn't used to be a worry for Tuchel. His initial management saw Chelsea concede much fewer goals, meaning often 1-0 wins were enough. Now though, not only is the form poor since the end of last season, his side have already conceded nine goals, the sixth worst record in the league this season. It took them 15 matches to concede that many goals last season.

His attack is also faltering. Chelsea are yet to score more than two goals in a match this season and haven't done so in the league at home in 15 matches, with that happening just four times in 20 matches when you include away performances as well.

It's a worrying run of form that even the addition of Raheem Sterling hasn't been able to help, with Kai Havertz's first goal of the season ending up being the match winner for Chelsea.

Manchester City, on the other hand, have come from behind to win four of the last five matches that they've been a goal down in.

Unless it becomes a common habit, which Tuchel won't want it to, Chelsea will have to cut out the poor goals because they have gone behind in three of the six games so far this season and given the rarity of comeback wins, isn't something to build a season around.
