Although the start of the 2023-24 Boston Celtics season is right around the corner, there are still a few questions about the team’s final depth chart. Boston may still make a move or two before the year begins. At the time of this writing, Boston has an open roster spot and just 11 fully guaranteed contracts on the books with the season set to tip in late October.
Veteran Austin Rivers appears to have eyes for a gig in Boston, and even reached out to team president Brad Stevens about a possible role in Celtics green. In a recent appearance on the Bill Simmons Podcast, the guard spoke highly of Stevens and the Celts. Rivers told Simmons he spoke on the phone with Stevens about possibly joining the team.

“That’s why I called (Brad),” Rivers continued. “I told him I’d love to be a part of the team. He said a lot of positive things. We’ll see if that’s something that will come to fruition. I’ve always loved Brad. I’ve always been a fan of him.”
Technically Rivers and Stevens do have a relationship in Boston. Back in 2015, the Celtics traded for Rivers, who three days later was re-routed to the Los Angeles Clippers. He didn’t appear in any games for the Celtics, however.
Boston’s guard rotation does have a few question marks, especially around what happens next with Malcolm Brogdon. A little extra depth in the backcourt could help provide a bit of flexibility moving forward. Rivers was an effective reserve player for the Minnesota Timberwolves last season.
