This Morning left viewers equal parts stunned and divided on Wednesday as presenters Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard tucked into food mid-interview, causing a stir on social media.
The duo welcomed First Dates star Fred Sirieix to the studio, who was there to show off a homemade Jamaican curry and chips – a dish inspired by his Jamaican wife, affectionately known as “Fruitcake.” Fred recently tied the knot with her in Jamaica and often blends her heritage into his cooking, reported the Express.
Ben and Cat were clearly loving the flavours, with show guest Sam Thompson also raving about the meal. Cat couldn’t resist diving in, grabbing a handful of French fries, and munching away live on air. But while the trio looked delighted, some viewers were anything but impressed.
One viewer fumed: “It is not very professional that they are eating and presenting at the same time.” Another cringed: “Why can’t they wait 10 minutes to eat into the mic ffs?” And a third added: “Please tell me this isn’t a new thing where presenters eat into the sh*** prepared live on TV while interviewing and presenting?”
The food segment is a regular feature on This Morning, and while it often goes down a treat online, this time it sparked more groans than likes.
Later in the show, things took a far more emotional turn when Sam Thompson opened up about a terrifying moment in his family’s life. The Made In Chelsea star revealed that he was at ITV’s Palooza party when he got a distressing call about his sister, Louise Thompson.
Louise had suffered a life-threatening haemorrhage during childbirth, and Sam immediately rushed to the hospital.
“When Louise had the haemorrhage, I was actually at the ITV Palooza and my mum called and said ‘you need to get to the hospital now,’” he recalled. “I actually snuck into the hospital past all the guards and just sat in a room with Ryan [Louise’s partner] all night waiting to find out whether Louise was going to survive. It was nuts.”
Sam described the sheer panic and helplessness of watching someone you love go through such a traumatic event. “It’s a weird thing when someone you love so much is in so much crisis and who you become in that moment,” he added. From crunchy fries to raw emotion, Wednesday’s This Morning episode had it all — and viewers certainly had a lot to say about it.
