This Morning viewers confused by 'unexpected' start to show amid reports of Holly and Phil 'rift'

This Morning viewers were confused by the "unexpected" start of today's show.

Monday's edition of ITV's flagship daytime programme was presented by Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield. The two have recently faced reports that their working relationship has become strained.

It emerged this weekend that Holly had reportedly cut ties with her long-time TV co-host and close friend. The Mirror exclusively reported that Holly had been pushing for ITV to make a decision on her co-host so she can rebrand herself and plan for the future if required.

Today was the first time they had appeared on screen together since the reports. The programme traditionally starts with an announcement from the two about what is coming up in today's show.

However, the latest episode started in unfamiliar circumstances with a piano medley from famous composer, Alan Menken, who appeared on the show ahead of the Little Mermaid's release this summer.

Fans following the show on Twitter were taken aback by the unexpected start to the programme.

Leanne said:"Not me thinking they refused to present so they got some one to play the piano last minute to pass time"

Liam commented: "NOT THEM STARTING IT WITH A PIANO"

@themumjob posted: "Starting with a piano player I mean wtaf!"

Holly and Phil put on a united front in today's episode and did not address the feud reports. Fans were confused as they expected them to discuss it when they covered Monday's headlines.

Mark said: "Honestly, watching Camilla Tominey and Gyles Brandreth dodge the elephant in the room is painful. Where is Matthew Wright when you need him?"

Steve added: "This elephant’s so big, it could fill the room."

Gaenor commented: "Are they going to address the elephant in the room? We’re all waiting…."

@'customerservace posted: "Normally they'd address the elephant in the room...this could be real"
