This Morning star sparks fierce debate after admitting how often he showers

This Morning have sparked a furious debate about how often to shower during a chat on the ITV show this morning.

Matthew Wright appeared on the ITV show today, as they discussed a recent study, which revealed that nearly a third of people have changed their showering habits. However, his revelation that he only showered once a week at times left both hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield stunned as a debate soon broke out.

Holly explained that she felt people did shower too much, whilst Phil couldn't believe Matthew only showered once a week or whenever he had human contact with other people or was on TV.

Speaking in the news segment, Matthew shared: "I know that since Covid really, once we were stuck at home, the daily shower went out the window and I hold my hand up, it hasn't really come back.

"I shower for you obviously and then I don't really shower again until I have to see you - or when I next have human contact."

A shocked Phil shouted, "That's a week!" before adding more details about the survey. "Thirty percent of people are changing their showering habits, 27 per cent are worried about how their hygiene routine is affecting their bills, and a third of those cutting back are turning their water off when it's not needed," he continued.

Holly then chimed in to add that she understood the point behind the cut backs, sharing: "Apparently we do shower too much. I get that. Apparently, al the natural oils in your skin, by shampooing your hair and using soap, you're destroying that barrier."

The original survey claimed Brits could save over £100 a year by halving the amount of time they spend showering. A poll of 2,000 adults found the typical person showers six times a week, for an average of eight minutes each time.

Over a quarter (26%) have been accused by someone in their household of spending too long in the shower, while 31% have complained that others they live with are guilty of this. However, 30% have amended their shower habits in the face of rising energy bills – with one in ten (11%) even swapping washing their hair for using dry shampoo, instead.

The most popular showering times are 7.45am, and 7.54pm - as the study found 42% would rather opt for a wash in the morning, compared to just 27% in the evening. Seven in ten also admitted they let the water run for an average of 17 seconds.
