This Morning has sparked a furious debate over whether to keep potatoes in the fridge.
Amid the limits set by some supermarkets on fruits and vegetables, talk on the ITV mid-morning show turned to how to best preserve your fruit and vegetables and make them last longer. Alice Beer fronted the segment, revealing if potatoes could be kept in the fridge or not as well as where it was best to store other produce such as tomatoes and cucumbers.
The conversation sparked a debate between hosts Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield about where they keep their potatoes, with Phil revealing he keeps his in the fridge, although Holly didn't seem so keen.
"So there are a lot of things you can't get hold of - but when you do, you want to store them well. We've had a massive hoo ha this week because I've been on the programme and said you mustn't store your potatoes in the fridge because the Food Standards Agency says not to," Alice began to explain as she revealed why she advised people not to keep their potatoes in the fridge.
"The science behind is that the starch would turn to sugars, those sugars have been found to release, on cooking, cancers which when fed to animals, they cause cancers. Ergo it might well happen in humans. They've gone back on that advice now and said not only is it perfectly safe to keep them in the fridge, they're going to last longer."
Phil agreed, saying: "I keep my potatoes in the fridge and they last forever."
Their conversation moved on to other fresh produce, but it quickly went back to the potatoes as the trio discussed their own feelings on storing potatoes and how keeping them in the fridge made them last longer.
Phil even joked he said hello to them every morning, as viewers rushed to social media to give their own opinion.
One viewer wrote online: "I put my potatoes in the fridge now. They last for ages #ThisMorning," whilst another added: "I put bread in the fridge. And potatoes, tomatoes and eggs #ThisMorning."
"Potatoes plastic container dark cupboard last for ages. Wrap lettuce in kitchen roll it last a long time. Apples 7 weeks fridge. Cucumber covered in water with a pinch of bi-carb sealed container last much longer (rinse before use) #ThisMorning," a third viewer shared online whilst giving their own hacks to making fruit and vegetables last longer.
