This Morning's Phillip Schofield emotional as he shares how he escaped 'dark time'

This Morning's Phillip Schofield was emotional as he revealed how he escaped a very dark time in his life.

The broadcaster hosted Wednesday's edition of the show alongside Holly Willoughby. The show endorsed a suicide prevention project ran by mental health charity, Campaign Against Living Misreably (CALM).

The charity has launched a new interactive exhibition named the Last Photo Project, which is situated on London's Southbank and shows the faces of 50 people who lost their life to suicide. Statistics reveal the number of people who have lost their life to suicide has increased to 125 people a week in the UK.

Phil opened up on his own mental health struggles and urged people to communicate their feelings as this is what helped him overcome a "dark time". He said: "The key is to talk to people… I went through some very, very dark times and I leaned heavily on my friends - as Holly knows - so you have to talk to somebody, you can’t do it on your own.”

The broadcasters were joined by Shirley Ballas for the discussion. The Strictly Come Dancing judge lost her bother to suicide in in 2003 at the age of 44 and he is one of the faces included in the campaign.

Shirley echoed Phil's advice. She said: "We are in 2022 now, there are many organisations where you can reach out to communicate on a small level. We’re in a moving world with social media, life goes so fast, and if you just take a step back, a breath, a moment, and listen and really try to see your family or friend."

If you feel distressed and would like to talk to someone, you could call the CALM helpline on 0800 58 58 58

The Samaritans 24-hour helpline can be contacted on 116123.

Mind can also be contacted on their Infoline: 0300 123 3393.
