This Morning's Phillip Schofield applauded after aiming savage swipe at Boris Johnson

Phillip Schofield was applauded by fans after aiming a cheeky dig at Boris Johnson on today's This Morning.

The 59-year-old broadcaster was fronting Wednesday's edition of ITV's flagship daytime programme alongside Rochelle Humes.

The presenters were joined by Matthew Wright and Camilla Tominey to discuss the fallout from the allegations that claimed government staff gathered to wish the Prime Minister a happy birthday inside Number 10 during the first lockdown.

The chat moved on to the news the world famous knob tossing festival in Dorset has been cancelled.

The Dorset knob is a hard biscuit and the contest involves competitors hurling the sweet treat as far as they can.

More than 8,000 people took part in the 2019 event and Phil explained this year's edition has been cancelled due to supply issues.

Camilla joked she would not be commenting on the story until Sue Gray had completed an inquiry, before Phil interjected with a savage swipe at the Prime Minister.

He said: "She's commented on quite a few knobs as a matter of fact."

Rochelle added: "I'm not sure there's a shortage."

Camilla was stunned after the remark and viewers following the show on Twitter erupted in hysterics.

Amy said: "Phillip Schofield calling Boris Johnson a kn*b live on air, best thing he's said in years!"

Theresa posted: "Oh Phil that was absolute class!"

Briony commented : "Don’t often watch @thismorning but Phillip! Only you could get away with that"

Sophie said: "Now this is the news I want to hear about! Very well handled without going over the top @thismorning, I mean you could've gone really far with it but this was just perfect and made for a wonderful giggle. Pretty sure we're all in need of that at the moment!"

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV and ITV Hub
