This Morning's Phil and Holly slam 'callous' Bev Turner in tense cost of living debate

Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield didn't look too happy with one of their show regular's on today's This Morning.

The hosting duo were discussing the latest headlines with Bev Turner and Tom Swarbick and the conversation in the ITV studio soon turned to the cost of living crisis.

Telly star Bev was then slammed as callous by Phil as fans blasted her for "not having a clue" about the financial challenges facing people at the moment, writes the Mirror.

Holly explained, looking sad: "It is desperate times and then you hear stories like this and it's one of saddest stories I've ever heard...

"Parents who are living in McDonalds with their kids because of soaring costs, they buy as little food as they can justify. People have even seen families brushing their teeth in these restaurants and this is the reality of the situation we face."

Bev Turner was slammed by viewers (ITV)

But Bev replied: "I don't think there are that many people doing that, I think we have to keep it in perspective to some extent."

Holly wasn't taking that, replying: "But still someone is. This story hasn't just been made up, this is the reality for someone and if it's one person, that's terrible."

Bev responded immediately saying: "It is terrible but we also have - and I'm going to sound incredibly callous now - but we also have a huge employment shortage, we have more availability for jobs at the moment than we have ever had before."

"And who pays for the childcare?" Holly asked, as Bev continued: "If the children are not at school age Holly, I totally agree, that's really difficult. But if your children are at school all day, I'm sorry I just don't think..."

Phillip seemed just as irked by some of Bev's comments and told her: "But it does sound rather callous, because the mere fact of what Holly said they're in McDonald's with their kids, so those kids are maybe not at school age so what else do you do?"

Looking clueless, Bev replied: "I don't know Phillip, I don't know..."

"I mean essentially you're just saying, 'go out and get a job'," he replied as Bev tried to argue her opinion.

Viewers tuning in at home were also unimpressed with Bev's remarks and took to Twitter to comment.

"Shut it Bev. You have no idea! You don’t even have to worry about money! Get her off #thismorning," one person tweeted.

Another said: "Spoken by someone who doesn't have a clue about the poorest people in this Country. F*ck off Bev #ThisMorning.

A third viewer posted: "who is this woman, just bcos she doesn’t have to worry about money, get her off! She’s so opinionated #thismorning."

And a fourth person added: "Bev Turner isn’t in the real world is she #ThisMorning."

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV and ITV Hub.
