Martin Lewis has explained why people could be hit with energy bills above the £2,500 price cap.
The Money Saving Expert appeared on today's edition of This Morning to issue financial advice amid the cost-of-living crisis. Prime Minister Liz Truss confirmed bills would be frozen at £2,500 to ease the burden on energy customers in the UK.
A This Morning viewer named Louise contacted the show to ask why she had been quoted £5,000 after the price freeze. Martin explained the prize freeze has been "misused in some places" and clarified why some people could be hit with bills above £2,500.

He said: "That £2,500 is an illustration of what the price cap would be for someone on typical use. What's actually capped is the standing charge, the amount you pay per day, and the unit rate, which is the amount you pay for each unit of electricity and gas you use.
"If you use more, then you pay more. If you use less then you pay less. So the idea your bill can't go up to £5,000 is nonsense. If you use a lot and that would be a lot then it could go up to £5,000."
However, Martin admitted Louise's bills did seem unusually high and suggested she may either currently be in energy debt or has recently come off a cheap fix. The finance guru advise Louise to contact her energy bills to contact her provider to ask for clarification.
